I am alive!

FYI…Ramadan is noisy. I just heard the slaughter of some poor animal for the last 15 minutes or so and it has made me begin to reconsider eating meat. Well, sort of at least. There is a new mosque that was finished while I was gone and I have now heard enough sermons, prayers, and semi-wailing to keep me satisfied for a long time. For those of you who didn’t know, Ramadan started at the beginning of September and will run for the whole month.

Anyway, for those of you who wondered if I fell off the face of the earth…I kinda did. PLEASE forgive me for not e-mailing, blogging, etc. to let you know where I am or what was going on. I left my laptop in the States to be repaired which ended up being a much more difficult process than I anticipated. So, that has left me to use one shared dial-up line that is pretty much worthless. As soon as I get my laptop back I should be up and running again but for the time being I am rather isolated.

This Thursday is Ethiopian New Year so we will officially be celebrating the year 2001! Just in case you didn’t know, Ethiopia observes a completely different calendar, clock system, everything. For example, right now by my calculations, it is September 7, 2008 and the time is 6:03pm. According to an Ethiopian however it is a different month, day, 2000 instead of 2008 and the time is 12:04. It can make planning an event rather difficult!

I am going to an Ethiopian friend’s house to celebrate on Thursday so I will take pictures to share whenever I can. She wants to teach me how to use a live chicken to make Doro Wot (a dish that they eat) so this should be entertaining! I am sure that they are going to have a good time laughing at me trying to cook Ethiopian style!

I am guessing you have connected with my sister, Kara Harding, since Bingham is such a huge school:) I just thought I would clarify that if it ever crossed your mind. It is good to see you are doing well. Give Kara a hug from me.
